About
Epithalon is a synthetic tetrapeptide with the sequence alanyl-glutamyl-aspartyl-glycine. It was developed from work on pineal gland extracts conducted in Russia and has been studied largely within that research tradition, which means much of the primary literature is regionally concentrated and not always replicated elsewhere. That context is worth carrying into any reading of the evidence.
Mechanism
Reported work associates Epithalon with telomerase activity in cultured human somatic cells, and with regulation of melatonin secretion by the pineal gland. Proposed mechanisms include interaction with promoter regions of specific genes, though the molecular detail is less well characterised than for compounds with a defined receptor target. The relationship between telomerase activity in culture and any organism-level outcome remains an open research question rather than a settled one.
What research has examined
The literature includes cell-culture studies of telomerase activity and animal work on circadian and pineal function. Independent replication outside the originating research programme is limited.
