5-Amino-1-methylquinolinium is a small molecule, not a peptide, studied as an inhibitor of nicotinamide N-methyltransferase (NNMT). It appears in metabolic and longevity research because of the position that enzyme occupies in NAD+ handling. It is included in this catalogue for that reason rather than as a peptide.

Mechanism

NNMT catalyses the methylation of nicotinamide, diverting it away from the salvage pathway that regenerates NAD+. Inhibiting the enzyme is described in the literature as preserving nicotinamide for that pathway, with reported downstream effects on intracellular NAD+ concentration and on sirtuin activity. Published work in adipose tissue models associates NNMT inhibition with changes in cellular energy expenditure.
